SAIC Grows Indiana Presence in WestGate

The WestGate is now home to a new enterprise facility for the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), America's seventh largest commercial defense contractor [NYSE: SAI]. The new two-story 37,000 sq. ft. building includes a High-Power Laser and Optics Lab, more than 4,000 sq. ft. of secure space dedicated to Electronic Warfare system development and testing, a Rapid Prototyping and Development Lab, and an Environmental Lab. About 200 scientists, engineers and technical professionals work in the new SAIC enterprise facility, bringing the total number of SAIC workers in Indiana to about 1,000 (up from 120 in 2001).

Congressman Brad Ellsworth (Indiana 8th District) and Lt. Governor Becky Skillman joined local officials and WestGate representatives in late March 2009 to formally open the facility.

SAIC is a global corporation and a leading contractor for the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, with fiscal year 2008 revenues exceeding $8 billion annually and more than 45,000 employees, and a local workforce of more than 1,000 employees providing engineering and technical solution services for Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in southern Indiana.

NSWC Crane is located on the U.S. Navy's third largest physical base and contributes more than $2.0 million each day into the Indiana economy, employing approximately 2,600 scientists, engineers, and technical professionals, as well as a local contractor base of approximately 1,700 employees.

SAIC's WestGate @ Crane location is home to the SAIC Warfare Systems and Integration Solutions Operation, supporting NSWC Crane customers in Special Missions, Strategic Missions, and Electronic Warfare/Information Operations. SAIC personnel provide innovative, leading edge technical solutions and NSA Crane Mission Support with engineering, software, logistics, technical, multimedia services for our Warfighters. The operation also works with other SAIC sites in Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

In late 2007 Governor Mitch Daniels joined WestGate @ Crane executives to break ground on the now-completed $4 million SAIC facility, declaring that his administration was prepared to help the WestGate become "the flagship facility" of Indiana's 18 Certified Technology Parks. Other state-Certified Technology Parks in Indiana include Purdue University's three parks (the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, the Purdue technology facility in Indianapolis and a third in Jeffersonville), two Indiana University-sponsored tech parks (Bloomington and the Emerging Technology Center in Indianapolis) and others.
