Much goes on behind the scenes in preparing for Night to Shine. Kim Burkhart, a member of the local organizing team, said volunteers put in a lot of time to ensure special guests have the best experience possible.
“Without each and every volunteering pouring their heart and soul into this night, it would not be possible,” said Burkhart. “When a group of servant-minded volunteers join together for such a great cause, it is one of the best blessings a person can receive.”
One of the best parts of the event for many is dressing up but formal wear isn’t always an attainable option for every special guest. To make sure each guest can look his or her best, Burkhart said a formal wear shop, stocked with both men’s and women’s formal wear, shoes and accessories will be available to register special guests.
Donations of new or gently used formal wear attire of all sizes are currently being accepted at Antioch Christian Church.
“We do have a need for men’s clothing,” Burkhart said. “We will have formal wear shop open two days for our special guests to come pick out an outfit.”
Burkhart said special guests can pick out their Night to Shine attire free of charge on Jan. 6 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and again on Jan. 14 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Those coming to shop should enter through the north doors. The prom shop will be held in the church atrium.
For special guests wanting their hair and makeup to be fit for a queen, Burkhart said beginning at 3 p.m. on Feb. 9, hairstylists and makeup artists will be offering their services at WestGate Academy.
Two local salons, Taylor’ed Look in Washington and Tara’s in Plainville, will offer appointments throughout the day at their respective locations.
With so many opportunities available to special guests and volunteers, Burkart said this year a website has been set up to help relay information.
“One of our volunteers, Jennifer Hadlock, helped create the website,” she said.
That website contains registration forms for special guests and volunteers, a frequently asked questions section, donation information and more.
“It helps put all the information in one place,” said Burkhart. “We want to make things as easy for people as possible.”
