This time next summer, kids will be splashing away summer days in a brand-new public swimming pool in Bloomfield.
And a comedy event set for Saturday night will help raise the rest of the money needed for the project.
Well-known Indiana comedian Donnie Baker will perform at WestGate Conference and Training Center, near the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, at 8:15 p.m. Ticket prices start at $20. Baker is a regular on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom radio show.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Fill the Pool fund, which has already raised $530,000 for the pool project. Preconstruction work is under way and demolition of structures at the former pool site are set to begin soon.
The goal of the Fill the Pool committee is to maintain the same pool size and diving area, add a zero entrance at one end of the pool and make accommodations for people with disabilities. Another $115,000 is needed to complete the project.
Town council members shut down the Bloomfield Community Pool in the summer of 2012 because of safety concerns. Engineers inspected the pool and and found structural and hydraulic deficiencies. It has been closed since.
The vision of reopening the pool “is becoming a reality,” a news release from the committee says. “Starting from a budget of nothing, a handful of faithful visionaries have worked tirelessly to raise the needed funds for the reconstruction project.”
The pool committee also is selling pavers that will be used to create a sidewalk for the pool. Purchasers can have them personalized, and the cost ranges from $250 to $1,000. They can be purchased at Bloomfield Town Hall or by calling Sophie Haywood at 812-384-3427.
